Greg Raymer is the 2004 World Series of Poker Main Event champ. The “Fossilman”, as he's often called, has made it deep in many events since that time, but hasn't clocked a major win – until now. When Raymer sat down to play in the $320 Pot Limit Omaha with re-buys tournament at PokerStars, his online home base, little did he know when all was said and done, that he'd win the whole thing.
771 folks, one less than last year, joined the former patent attorney and rumored vice presidential candidate in the event including Daniel Negreanu, Humberto Brenes, Katja Thater, John Duthie and jalla79, who won Event #3 earlier in the 2007 WCOOP, which was also an Omaha tourney.
90 people made bank in the event. It took almost eight hours for the bubble to burst. As the final eighteen sat down to play, Raymer was third in chips. Within just two hands, he took over the chip lead in a big way, and never really looked back.
tiltjezz was the tenth place finisher. He lost to the pocket kings of Rsa87, ushering in the final table. At one point, it looked like Raymer might not make it that far. The man who won millions at the WSOP got disconnected at quite an inopportune moment. However, Raymer proved that his talent made up for a lack of decent internet connection as he got back in the swing of things shortly upon his return.
The stacks were deep enough to ride out any storm as the action got underway. However, a confrontation was looming just on the horizon. Oswaldo took a stand first and watched his tournament life slip away just as quickly. His ninth place finish was good for over $9,000.
Raymer waited in the wings for a while. However, he chose his spots well. He came out with guns blazing and a nut flush on the river to eliminate Rsa87 in seventh place. He said he was lucky, but we think it was a bit more than that. The ouster kicked Raymer's game into hyperdrive. He began to take calculated risks and made some serious moves.
At the start of four-handed play, a deal was discussed. O.Mustang was the chip leader. FossilMan and MrSmits were close behind. O.Mustang didn't wan to settle for less than $110,000 so play continued. Soon after, FossilMan made a jack-high flush on the flop, eliminating rutasasha.
In the early going of heads-up play, Raymer took over the chip lead from O.Mustang. This caused Mustang to seek a deal. Raymer politely declined this time, and won the bracelet and the day.
Here are the results:
1) Greg “FossilMan” Raymer — $168,362 2) O.Mustang — $97,022 3) MrSmits — $64,919 4) rutasasha — $49,938 5) -db- — $40,664 6) PlayaAAK8 — $32,103 7) Rsa87 — $23,542 8) Rage Of Fury — $15,695 9) Oswaldo — $9,274
