Vitaly Lunkin Wins Event #27 at the 2008 World Series of Poker

2,706 people paid to play in the 27th event at the 2008 World Series of Poker. The $1,500 NLHE competition had 17 players left at the beginning of the third and final day. After four hours of play, the final nine remained. Vitaly Lunkin, a 37 year old hailing from Moscow, struck first blood, taking out Sweden's Philip Yeh in ninth position. Lunkin is a former Renju World Champion. (Renju is a Japanese board game.)

Lunkin, who has been making the tip to the WSOP for seven years without making a final table before 2008, also knocked out Kenneth Terrell in fourth position. Terrell, a WSOP newcomer, earned more than $232,000 for his efforts. Lunkin then eliminated Bobby Firestone in third place, entering into heads-up play against Brett Kimes with 4,700,000 chips.

A short while later, Lunkin became the second Russian player to earn a World Series bracelet holder. Alex Kravchenko, who Lunkin says encouraged him to enter this event, won the first in '07.

These are the results:

1) Vitaly Lunkin – 628,417 2) Brett Kimes - $387,837 3) Bobby Firestone – $277,026 4) Kenneth Terrell - $232,702 5) Trevor Donaldson - $190,225 6) Richard Alm - $149,594 7) Barry Schultz - $112,657 8) Robert Brown - $84,954 9) Philip Yeh - $57,990
