Philip Tom Wins Event #11, A NLHE Shootout at the 2008 World Series of Poker
360 people paid to play in the $5,000 NLHE shootout at the 2008 World Series of Poker. Each of these entrants had the same mission – to defeat three entire tables to become the world champ. Aggression was the name of the game due to the short-handed (six players max per table) format. The final six began the last table with the same number of chips – 1,000,000, ensuring the crowd that there would be no lack of action.
Online specialist Tim “Tmay420” West hit the rail in fifth place. His A,K proved to be no match for Greg “FBT” Mueller's pocket nines. Mueller, who was runner up in this event last year, took a commanding chip lead at this point. He made it all the way to heads-up play against Philip Tom. Tom had never made it higher than 30th at a World Series of Poker tournament prior to this event and began the one-on-one matchup with a bit of a chip lead.
In the end, Tom, a resident of Seattle, Washington, defeated the Canadian player, taking the title and the $477,990 first place finish.
These are the final standings:
1) Phillip Tom - $477,990 2) Greg Mueller - $298,638 3) Leo Wolpert - $187,812 4) Sirous Jamshidi - $118,440 5) Tim West - $63,450 6) Thomas Roupe - $38,070
