Jason Young Collects $329,872 for His Win at the 2008 World Series of Poker

Event #17 at the 2008 World Series of Poker was a $1,500 No Limit Hold'em Shootout. A total of 1,000 people paid to play in the event, generating a tasty total prize pool of $1,370,596. Since the event was a shootout, the combatants had to defeat their entire table before moving onto the next round. Then, each would have to beat that entire table before making the final table. Talk about pressure, right?

Jason Young, aged 26 and a former parks and recreation worker, took down all three tables to claim victory in this hotly contested event. The man who recently gave up his day job to play poker professionally defeated Mike Schwartz, not once, but twice in a grueling heads-up match-up.

At one point, Schwartz, a 58 year old executive from Encino, CA thought he was on the ropes when young took down a big pot with both players going all-in. However, to both players' surprise, Schwartz actually had Young covered and retained a few chips to remain in the match. Disappointed, Young returned to table and faced an onslaught from the aggressive businessman, who battled his way back and nearly gave Young a run for his money.

In the end, Young put Schwartz away, happily claiming his first bracelet and the $329,872 first place prize.

Here are the final results:

1) Jason Young - $335,565 2) Mike Schwartz - $209,527 3) John Strzemp III - $129,675 4) Rory Monahan - $82,582 5) Matthew Giannetti – $40,267 6) Kyle Bowker - $23,887 7) Sergey Rybachenko – $15,697 8) Tom West - $12,421 9) Alexander Triner - $9,828
