David Woo Wins Event #39 at the 2008 World Series of Poker

2,720 combatants took to the felt for the second-largest field at the 2008 World Series of Poker thus far in another $1,500 NLHE tournament. This near-record field drove the prize pool up to an impressive $3,712,800 and paid out some cash to 270 players. Nick Binger, Theo Tran, Kenna James, Hasan Habib, and Joe Tehan were among the professional-level players who earned money in the tournament.

However, as the final table got underway, David Woo, a South Korean born poker player, who finished 5th at the 2007 WSOP in Event 27, earning more than $115,000, may have been the most experienced player remaining. Woo had more than one million chips in his stack but wasn't the chip leader. That honor went to Michigan's Thom Werthmann.

Werthmann, who has a bracelet in Pot Limit Hold'em from the 2005 WSOP, took fifth place in this event. Werthmann was part of a two-for-one elimination hand, along with Curtis Early. David Woo collected the remaining chips of both players and continued to dominate the final table.

As heads-up action began, Woo, who currently resides in Atlanta, had 5,000,000 chips to Canadian Matt Wood's 3,165,000. On the final hand, Woo held pocket tens. He led before the flop and after the flop, despite the fact that his opponent made top pair (nines). The turn and river brought blanks and the man who took 132nd place in the Main Event at the 2006 WSOP now had a bracelet to call his own.

Here are the final results:

1) David Woo - $631,550 2) Matthew Wood - $389,844 3) Eric Beren - $278,460 4) Habib Khanis - $233,906 5) Thomas Werthmann - $191,209 6) Curtis Early - $150,368 7) Thanh Dat Tran - $113,240 8) Michael Glasser - $85,394 9) Jim Paras - $58,290
