David Borg Wins New Zealand Poker Championships
Australian David Borg defeated a field of 133 other players at the 2008 New Zealand Poker Championship. The event, which was held at Christchurch Casino on South Island, featured a $NZD 2,500 buy-in. The top Kiwi finisher was John Pye. His third place finish netted him $NZD 34,000.
Tony Hachem, Joe's brother, played Borg heads-up. Tony, an accountant who has cashed at no less than two WSOP events, helps manage big brother Joe's affairs. A talented poker player in his own right, the younger Hachem brother finished second in this event, netting his biggest cash to date.
Borg takes home $NZD 100,000 for his big win. Of his accomplishment, he humbly said, “I knew I had the ability to win a big tournament but never thought it would actually happen.”
