Chris Ferguson Wins NBC Heads Up Championship in 2008

The 2008 NBC National Heads-Up Championship took place over the weekend. 64 players took to the felt including Shannon Elizabeth, Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan. Andy Bloch was not originally invited to the competition. However, he got the call as a last-minute replacement for comedian/actor Brad Garrett of “Everybody Loves Raymond” fame. Last year, Paul Wasicka won the event after taking Doyle Brunson's place so Bloch had to feel pretty good about his chances.

In fact Bloch, who holds two electrical engineering degrees from MIT and a JD from Harvard Law School, made it all the way to the final match against Chris “Jesus” Ferguson. Ferguson, who has a Ph.D. in Computer Science from UCLA, has been a runner-up in this event twice before (2005 and 2006). He had to come from behind in the final match-up to beat Bloch and win the big one.

In the third match, Ferguson dispatched his fellow Full Tilt-sponsored pro Bloch. His pocket jacks held up and Ferguson was thrilled to claim the $500,000 and the title. Bloch received $250,000 for his second-place finish in the competition.
