California State Poker Championships Ready for Spring
The California State Poker Championship makes major changes to its schedule and will now be held from April 30 – May 22nd, 2009.
The California State Poker Championship is usually held in the fall. However, this year, event organizers will take place during the few weeks prior to the beginning of the World Series of Poker. The tournament series, which is hosted at the Commerce Casino in Los Angeles, begins on April 30th and ends May 22nd, 2009.
There are a total of 24 events in the schedule, all leading up to the $5,100 buy-in No Limit Hold'em Main Event on Friday, Mary 22, 2009. This year, there are several additions to the tournament schedule including two HORSE events, a $200 buy-in NLHE competition and $545 double-elimination Heads-Up competition.
The Main Event has a guaranteed prize pool of $1,000,000 and features a buy-in of $5,100 which is a significant bump up from the $1,040 buy-in last year. John Griffo, a spokesperson for the Casino, mentioned that this was to increase the profile of the event, making it a major event.
Matt Savage will be running the series as the Tournament Director. Savage, who was at the helm of the 2009 LA Poker Classic, also held at the Commerce, said that “I'm excited to be back at Commerce Casino to provide players with great tournament structures and different games."
